On Monday 22ndJuly Coniston House embarked on to their latest challenge, the three peaks.
After completing their virtual row across the Irish Sea and back for St Patricks Day on a rowing machine, it was time for a new adventure.
In total including the climb and the ‘virtual’ walk between the mountains, Ben Nevis, Scar Fell Pike and Snowden it equated to a massive 500 miles, and all of this had to be completed within just four days and nights on a treadmill.
So as the clock struck 2pm the team were off and running (well walking). After a fantastic motivational speech by resident John, he then took to the treadmill to start the challenge off with the very first steps for the 500 miles.
By 6pm on day one, the staff, residents, visitors and family had all made such an incredible effort almost reaching the first milestone.
By day three after the spectacular involvement by the whole team, including a passing delivery man the running total was over 360 miles, leaving 140 miles to complete in a short amount of time.
With just a few hours left to complete the hike, it was down to the night staff to start shaving off some miles from the balance.
As the finish time grew closer Coniston House pulled out all of the stops to get the miles clocking up. From staff to visitors (of all ages) residents, tradesmen and every single passer by jumped onto the treadmill to ‘do their bit’ to help to complete the challenge.
Finally, on day 4 after 4 long days and 500 miles, the challenge was completed by Rosemary walking the final mile. Singing the Proclaimers – “I’m gonna be” definitely spurred the team on, but I can safely say they walked 500 miles, but I don’t think they would of wanted to walk another 500 straight away.
So instead of more walking and in true Coniston House style it was time to swap the trainers for party shoes and dance the afternoon away. With the singing provided by Laura, fantastic refreshments and lots of laughter it was another fantastic challenge.
Well done ‘Team Coniston’ and I’m sure you are already busy thinking about your next challenge.
