Although the weather may currently be very cold, we’re already looking forward to spending more time outdoors when Spring and Summer come around. At each of our Rochcare residential homes, we’ve ensured there are accessible, and beautifully maintained, outside spaces for those we care for and their families to enjoy.
We believe gardens and outside spaces are hugely important for mental health, wellbeing and physical health as well as providing opportunities for socializing and conversation.
All our gardens include pergolas and covered structures, and at Royley House in Royton and Coniston House in Chorley, these form the focal point to the space. These shaded spots are perfect for gathering under with drinks and snacks and provide comfort for those who don’t like it too hot in the Summer. We’ve also carefully placed a range of benches and outdoor seating options in each outdoor space to encourage socializing and meeting with family and friends.
Planting herbs, and other plants that engage multiple senses, in raised beds is a great activity for residents who enjoy watching plants grow, smelling flowers and eating produce straight from a care home garden! At Pendle Brook, our home in Oswaldtwistle, residents were able to grow strawberries in trugs and enjoyed them as part of their afternoon tea. Activities like feeding and watching wildlife are also often very popular. Bank Hall in Burnley is surrounded by wooded areas and residents have described seeing squirrels, foxes and even deer in their gardens on a regular occurrence.
The outdoor spaces at each Rochcare home are maintained and kept safe by the Maintenance Expert, based at each individual home. Although light gardening tasks like planting, weeding and sweeping are great ways for those we care for to stay mobile and flexible, the larger tasks like mowing the lawn are all taken care of by our team.
